This reading includes Psalm 22, which Jesus quoted on the cross, and Psalm 23, the most familiar psalm in the Bible.

From the Cross to the Shepherd

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 (KJV)

Psalm 22 begins with the words Jesus cried from the cross, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Then it describes things that happened at the crucifixion: “they pierced my hands and my feet” and “They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.” David wrote it about a thousand years before Jesus. The psalm doesn’t end in despair. It ends with the whole world turning to God. Then comes Psalm 23. Notice that David talks about God as “he” until the valley. In the valley he starts talking to God directly: “thou art with me.”

Reflect: Where’s your valley right now, and can you speak to God directly in it?

Psalm 21

1For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!

2Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah

3For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of fine gold on his head.

4He asked life of thee, thou gavest it him; even length of days for ever and ever.

5His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty dost thou lay upon him.

6For thou makest him most blessed for ever: thou makest him glad with joy in thy presence.

7For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the lovingkindness of the Most High he shall not be moved.

8Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee.

9Thou shalt make them as a fiery furnace in the time of thine anger. The LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

10Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.

11For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a device, which they are not able to perform.

12For thou shalt make them turn their back, thou shalt make ready with thy bowstrings against the face of them.

13Be thou exalted, O LORD, in thy strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.

Psalm 22

1For the Chief Musician; set to Aijeleth hash-Shahar. A Psalm of David. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

2O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou answerest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.

5They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not ashamed.

6But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.

7All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

8Commit thyself unto the LORD; let him deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighteth in him.

9But thou art he that took me out the womb: thou didst make me trust when I was upon my mother’s breasts.

10I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s belly.

11Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

12Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.

13They gape upon me with their mouth, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

14I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

15My Strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of evil-doers have enclosed me; they pierced my hands and my feet.

17I may tell all my bones; they look and stare upon me:

18They part my garments among them, and upon my vesture do they cast lots.

19But be not thou far off, O LORD: O thou my succour, haste thee to help me.

20Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog;

21Save me from the lion’s mouth; yea, from the horns of the wild-oxen thou hast answered me.

22I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.

23Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and stand in awe of him, all ye the seed of Israel.

24For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.

25Of thee cometh my praise in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

26The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek after him: let your heart live for ever.

27All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

28For the kingdom is the LORD’S: and he is the ruler over the nations.

29All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him, even he that cannot keep his soul alive.

30A seed shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord unto the next generation.

31They shall come and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done it.

Psalm 23

1A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3He restoreth my soul: he guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 24

1A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

2For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

3Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? and who shall stand in his holy place?

4He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, and hath not sworn deceitfully.

5He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6This is the generation of them that seek after him, that seek thy face, O God of Jacob. Selah

7Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in.

8Who is the King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.

9Lift up your heads, O ye gates; yea, lift them up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in.

10Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah

Psalm 25

1A Psalm of David. Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul.

2O my God, in thee have I trusted, let me not be ashamed; let not mine enemies triumph over me.

3Yea, none that wait on thee shall be ashamed: they shall be ashamed that deal treacherously without cause.

4Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

5Guide me in thy truth, and teach me; for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.

6Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.

7Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy lovingkindness remember thou me, for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.

8Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he instruct sinners in the way.

9The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.

10All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

11For thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity, for it is great.

12What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he instruct in the way that he shall choose.

13His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the land.

14The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.

15Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.

16Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted.

17The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses.

18Consider mine affliction and my travail; and forgive all my sins.

19Consider mine enemies, for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.

20O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in thee.

21Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait on thee.

22Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

Psalm 26

1A Psalm of David. Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD without wavering.

2Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.

3For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes; and I have walked in thy truth.

4I have not sat with vain persons; neither will I go in with dissemblers.

5I hate the congregation of evil-doers, and will not sit with the wicked.

6I will wash mine hands in innocency; so will I compass thine altar, O LORD:

7That I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

8LORD, I love the habitation of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwelleth.

9Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with men of blood:

10In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.

11But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.

12My foot standeth in an even place: in the congregations will I bless the LORD.
